What's On Thorold

Honored by the Mayor was Denis Bergeron whose quick actions helped save the life of Sylvia Kirkey.

On January 13th, the vehicle Kirkey had been out when her car overturned and entered a ditch on Thorold Townline Road when Bergeron witnessed what had happened and quickly came to help.

While Kirkley was unable to undo her seatbelt, Bergeron had gotten a rock and broken through the window to assist Kirkley out of the vehicle before it was submerged under water.

His selfless act of bravery was met with applause from council members and also the fire fighting unit that was the first one on scene.

Bernadette Secco spoke on the problems within the Accommodation Review Committee which has been responsible for the choosing of options to bring to the DSBN on what schools in the region should be closed.

Her opinion to boycott the ARC stating the many flaws in the current system including the process of having no appeal once the decision is handed down.

Not entering members in the ARC only results in the procedure of the operations ultimately ending in the closure of the school depending on what the board decides.

Secco had experience in the Niagara Distract closure and is looking to change the over layout of the plan so that schools will each have their fair say in the final opinions rather than being sent to a board like the DSBN.

Niagara Age-Friendly Community Initiative is moving forward into the city.

Virginia Stewart, the community coordinator is leading the pack on an initiative to create a city where all citizens to have security and equal respect no matter your age.

With a growing population of people, Stewart is looking to create a community for all ages. Creating awareness of age-friendly principles across all sectors while promoting older adults in society is what they are looking to create.

There is no cost request as the study has already begun in Pelham, Port Colborne, Niagara Falls and Fort Erie. Stewart hopes to get everything up and running come spring time of 2012.

Heather Kelley presented her resolution to fixing the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement which is currently under negotiations with thee Canadian Government and the European Union.

Kelley persists that new agreements would have a negative affect on local communities including for the ability of City Council to revive the manufacturing economy in the area.

Her resolution was for Thorold to be issued an exemption from the agreement allowing for Thorold to protect the powers of municipalities. That resolution would be sent to the Ontario Municipal Association, the Ontario Hospital Association, Ontario University Association and any other relevant organizations that will be effected by the new rules.
